I wanted to say thank you for your work and dedication while wrapping up our project over the past few weeeks. We could not have done it without you. It may have seeemed like fast and furious collaboration, but it all finally paid off. We compiled all of the data and reported in our poster presentation for FASEB (I have attached the poster to this post). I hope the surgery went well and you find a quick recovery, as you were a critical asset for our project (and many others). Again, thank you for your help and I will keep you informed of our manuscript progress. Take care.

I have a couple of students(High School) that have been working with me on the microcauterization device that I took up to show you after the ebat program last summer. We have made a few advances although the basic device is still in it's original form.

I have nearly completed my application for admissions to A&M for grad school. All that I need to do is finish my essay. I would appreciate all the feedback I can get for my essay. The more help the better. If you have time could you look over my essay and give me some pointers? I would appreciate any constructive criticism. Tell me what you think.

Melinda Lowry, the Higher Education Programs Coordinator from the American Physiological Society, has invited us to present our poster at a special APS undergraduate poster session at FASEB. As described, the session will provide us with an opportunity to highlight the research. The APS President, members of the APS Council and APS Committees will be there to meet and hear about the research. This session is in addition to the two general poster sessions that weekend.

This post is in response to the emails I have received regarding the experiments and camera in the lab.

Currently, there is only one AUP that has been approved. These new experiments are on the subject of thermoregulation and will not involve the bats being under the microscope until a later date. Since this is the only active AUP, the bats are not allowed to be brought into the room and placed under the scope (or used in other experiments) unless it is justified by an AUP. These experiments are not set to a schedule yet because this group is the only group with an active AUP. Therefore, they have the flexibility to schedule what days are convenient for them. I have requested that they give me as much notice as possible, but sometimes I am notified the morning of the day they wish to perform an experiment.

Please check out Missy's posted schedule information regarding the bat experiment schedule. She says: "I welcome everyone and anyone to watch these experiments. However, they are thermoregulation experiments which means they will not all be under the scope. Those that would like to watch can log on to the camera and watch us observe the bat and collect data."

Lab News:

A new bat experiment schedule has been posted in various locations in the lab. If you would like a personal copy please see me. Today was our first day back with experiments. I am very excited to see how Tonya’s experiment will play out. I invite you all to see this new experiment involving thermoregulation.

I know that the "big TAKS test" is on the horizon at this time, but I wanted to set up a thread on the eBat Teacher Group site to (1) to see what use the teacher blog still gets, and (2) have a place to share our successes and failures in specifically using the eBat information / educational products in our classrooms.

I guess the problem of connecting to the microscope has been resolved. There was an IP address issue which has been fixed.

Remote connection to the microscope should work unless there is some other problem.

Hey guys,

I was just wondering how we deal with our summer institute stipends/travel allowances in terms of taxes. I haven't recieved anything in the mail, so I'm a little confused as to what I put the stipend under on my tax forms. If someone could please help out ASAP it would be greatly appreciated!

Is there an individual that I can contact via e-mail who is the primary point of contact for your distant research program? I am looking for records/folder of e-mail communication between Prairie View and TAMU.

Just a brief report -- a co-op of homeschoolers used the archived clips on the site this week, and the young students were very intrigued by the potential of the website. Hopefully, they'll get comfortable enough with our current format to pose some questions or make some suggestions to the lab.

Can you describe 'review process'? I say this because we have been told for the last 3 months that it was 'kicked back' or is 'in review'? A lot of what I am trying to evaluate is the ability to effectively communicate concise details with TAMU. Thank you in advance for your efforts.

I am currently working on the M&M for the poster we are presenting. Unfortunately, I do not have a lot of insight with the actual establishment of our connection with TAMU, specifically the 'Request for expemtion to policy' that we had to go through last year. Also, I do not have the expertise in describing the software that we maintain. Could you provide a summary or paragraph or two that could help out the poster and my manuscript? I would also like to chat a little more so I can become more familiar. Thank you very much.

The USMA semester has just begun as of last Monday. It is imperative that we know the status of the AUPs at TAMU; it has been a month and a half since we last talked of the progress. I say this because we have two posters to present in April with no means to collect data. In addition, I have not seen any posts with feedback from anyone else besides Dr. Gatson. I understand that a little while ago, eBat resorted to using another website for communications. Did this happen again? I would like to start doing some experiments without the bats, but I have not heard anything from those in the lab who would be critical to the success of the experiments. I feel at this pace, we will only have one topic to present, the evaluation of the e-Research idea. Please let me know your thoughts.

I sincerely apologize for the extreme tardiness. We have finals this week and they prove to be quite challenging. Our winter leave begins 15 December, and I will be out of town for the majority of the time. I will keep contacts on eBat whenever I have access to the net. I would like to get some experiments rolling, especially to expand our current progress. I ask the RET group if there are specific topics that you would like to cover? And also, I have not yet heard anything from the eBat group besides Dr. Gatson. What do you guys/ladies think about this idea? I will be back at the USMA lab on 2 January so we could begin conducting experiments or at least coming up with a subject and subsequent procedures. I await your feedback. Thanks.

Hi from the RET Teachers from the summer of 2006. I was just wondering what we needed to do until the bat experiments start up again. I noticed you are still waiting on some of the AUP's for experiments. I know we are required to do a few remote experiments as well. Just wondering.
