The software you need to connect to the microscope is called SSHVNC. The following instructions will step you through the setup process and are modified from David's original instructions.
Steps to Installing-Setup SSHVNC to Connect to Our Microscope
- Go to http://sourceforge.net/project/showfiles.php?group_id=60894&package_id=81645
- Select the proper file to download based on your operating system and pick the "withVM" version. (If you already have a Java Virtual Machine installed you can select the "noVM" version, however, this is not recommended as you may not have the version of JVM that SSHVNC expects.)
- After installing, run the app and click on the "New Connection"
icon.
- Fill in the boxes on the Host tab as shown in the below screenshot. (Host: 128.194.191.24, Username: batfest,
Authentication Method: password).
- Click "Connect".
- Click "Ok" on the Usage Warning, then you should be presented with a
login prompt. The username should already be filled in with "batfest", [ask us for the password] Click "OK".
- If you typed everything correctly, the SSH connection should now be
established and you will be prompted for the VNC password, which is the
same as the SSH password. Click "Ok".
- You should now see the desktop. You'll probably need to resize the
window, and if your monitor is smaller than the one connected to the
microscope machine (19 inch) you'll have to scroll around a little to
see everything.
- Lastly, click the "Save Connection" icon. Type a name for this
connection (like TAMU-microscope or something), and click Save.
- From now on, when you run the app you'll just have to click the "Open
Connection" icon and double-click the xml file to connect.
When you are finished, you can click the "Close Connection" icon, or
just close the window to quit.
